If you look at Pinterest or Instagram or any social media, how often do you look and think how do these people seem to have it all.
- The House – amazingly decorated
- The Child – perfectly posed
- The Career – a success at all they seem to touch
- The body – no bumps or lumps (or a fear of the scales)
- The partner – supportive, handsome and their fitness buddy
- The friends – who they meet regularly for drinks and weekends away
- Organised – Elf on the shelf – check, advent breakfast – check, christmas shopping all bought and wrapped – check
They seem to have it all.
And then we compare. We find ourselves wanting. This makes us feel like the bad mum, wife, employee, employer, slimming club failure, etc, etc.
We all know (or we should by now) that Social Media does not reflect reality. It is a snapshot of a life. Just look at your own social media, would anyone know some of the problems you were having?
Your challenge for the week
Let go of the guilt. It’s the guilt that gets you.
When we feel we are not enough, if we haven’t done the Elf on the shelf or if the diet went totally off plan yesterday, we tell ourselves we are a failure, we feel bad about our inadequacies and then we feel guilty. We tell ourselves how useless we are, what a bad mum/wife/blogger/daughter we are.
We need to give ourselves permission to be human, to fail at perfection.
Perfection may sound like a great goal, but it brings anxiety and pressure we can all do without. (Listen to Oprah Winfrey and Shonda Rhimes talk about this very thing on Oprah’s Super Soul Sunday podcast).
In the words of Oprah Winfrey – remember, you can have it all, just not all at once.

I gave up trying to be perfect years ago, I’d rather just be me.

Being perfect is too much like hard work! We all need to just be ourselves. Our true imperfect selves
Amen to all this. For most of my life I have driven myself was too hard and have only recently learned to just be me and hope that will do
Oh you will do nicely, Kate. Being yourself is much less effort than trying to be something you’re not. #TheMMLinky
Couldn’t agree more, I can’t stand all the unnecessary pressure we put upon ourselves x #TheMMLinky
I don’t tend to feel guilty due to comparing myself to others any more, but more because I’m putting pressure on myself to be the best for my girls… it’s a mum thing! 🙂 #TheMMLinky
